The initial intention for this project was to achieve pluripotency through a treatment of both surface and volumetric articulation. In terms of volume, the goal was to design an object that would stand but not have legs.

In order to do this our design must have sharp curves that can make transitions from vertical to horizontal. The volume is oriented vertically in order to provide structural capacity. Although the design is elongated in the vertical direction, it can be oriented to achieve structural connections rather than just vertical support.
The three pieces that comprise our model are dependent upon each other for structural support and stability. Two symmetrical shoulder components hug a central head that is crafted to smoothly embrace its neighbors. Each shoulder has four flat face connections above and below the central body. The model depends on the lower belt for its ability to balance.

For surface treatment, we observed the Art Nouveau furniture pieces and architectural details by Victor Horta. These intricately crafted designs manage to blend surface and volume gracefully by allowing seams to guide directionality. Movement in the material is never impeded, maintaining flow and performance.
Each piece was cast in Ultracal Plaster using insulation foam for the middle piece and two 62 contours chipboard molds for the side pieces.

The concept for this project was to recreate the ground plane of the site in order to create diversity in program. The intention was also to keep the layout of the site relatively similar to the original. The project therefore is a renewal of the site/block.

The first step of the process was to lift and pull up the ground plane in order to fit the streetscape program under. The new ground plane then transforms and folds over to create the programmatic elements of the hotel, and residences.

The project was concentrated on using the folded plane to create the different types of occupancy for the hotel, like the lobby, back office, restaurant, penthouse as well as a rooftop lounge and terraces opening views to Roosevelt Park, located across Houston St.

Since concentrating on designing the Hotel, the site was developed as a massing strategy (see picture). The space between the hotel and the residences would be a square that would bring the 1st Street pedestrian traffic towards Houston St. Moreover, the sidewalk on Houston St., was pushed in the site and enlarged in order to create a promenade along the Hotel and ground floor retail spaces under the residences, connecting 1st Ave and the hotel to 2nd Ave, the existing cafe and park on that end of the site, as well as the subway entrance.

The project focuses on the learning environment environment. Interaction between clients, students, visitors and environmental design systems and concepts is clearly defined through the architecture. The systems become the architectural expression. The green wall training becomes a large element that travels through the space. The living machine becomes a focal point as the interior green landscape. The project is enclosed by a photovoltaic roof to create an interior micro-climate and house all of the learning training activities. The building merges with the surrounding landscape to become a focal point for the region and integrate into the UDA Masterplan for Hazelwood.

The idea was also to create an enclosed micro-climate that would both create an enclosed community space for learning. The only spaces that are actively heated and cooled are the office blocks and workshops. The atrium is passively heated and cooled throughout the use of operable windows in the roof and curtain wall. It is combined with an earthtube system to mediate between extremely cold and hot conditions.

As for the rest of the site, it was designed to be integrated with the building and the natural wetland on the southern portion of the site. It is a part of the complete masterplan set forth by the UDA. It integrates with possible future urban designs for the borough of Hazelwood. In addition, our site also blends in with landscape offering between the future metro stops as well as the Hot Metal Bridge and its various hiking and bike trails.

The ‘Kicks. Rule. Everything. Around. Me.’ was created for the Kicksburgh 2009 Show that was held at Carnegie Mellon University. The show was part of a class taught at the school called Sneakerology: 101. The sculpture was inspired by the U-N-I remix of the C.R.E.A.M. song by Wu-Tang Clan.
The process behind the sculpture started by 3D scanning 5 pairs of sneakers out of my collection. The sculptures were then milled with a CNC Milling Machine.
Each sneaker was represented by showing it’s side elevation and sole as those two are the main
elements of a sneaker.

In the development of this project, our intentions were to capture and create various qualitative atmospheres through specific modeling techniques. The techniques employed throughout the spaces were all focused on the use of lines – may it be lighting conditions or ornamental elements – exploring how these lines could allow for the creation of individual atmospheres. In this process, we created a series of very distant qualitative atmospheres that generated unique experiences in each space. Thus, we purposely created a building enclosure that would not index any of the interior spaces so that the journey throughout the building would be a constant discovery of new atmospheric conditions. Through the use of different lighting effects in each atmosphere of the project, we allow for a constantly evolving journey from exuberance to the ornate.

Our project is also tailored to meet specific issues of scale in both urban and experiential conditions. We have provided a retail component that morphologically assumes position within the geometry of the enclosure. These components increase the necessary rate of change to turn the corner of Omotesando into the quiet side street, where the facade flow slows down to an elegant pace and corresponding atmosphere. The project’s interiorities also breakdown with logical sequences of scale, with parallel geometrical and illumination strategies.

I started this project directly after graduating from Carnegie Mellon for a private client living in France. This project is located on the 9th floor at Christodora House. It consisted of doing a 300sq.ft studio renovation.
The main focus of the renovation was to create a greater sense of continuity between the living and dining space. This was achieved through the custom casework. An uninterrupted wood credenza connects both spaces harmoniously as well as functionally. Here the casework also serves as storage and a workspace for the client. Due to this utility the space is now expansive and open.
The renovation included redoing the wood floor, remodeling the existing kitchen, redesigning the existing closet, as well as incorporating a custom credenza.
At the beginning of the project, the client demanded to move the existing kitchen counter into the closet. Therefore, I got all the drawings ready for the expediter, and approved by an architect. However at the last minute, the client decided not to do as many changes. Thus, I did not need to get a construction permit.
The project was a great learning experience, as I was both acting as a Construction Manager, and a designer. In addition, I was in charge of dealing with the Building Management, and contractor throughout the process of the project.
